MG TD TF 1500 - Thanks Moss Motors
A while back I replaced my worn out steering rack with a new one from Moss. Last week I was preparing to take the mg td on a fun run and car show and was doing my prior drive inspection when I noticed some oil the floor in the vicinity of the rack. I determined the cause of the leak was the nut on top of the mount under the cross member had come loose. I tried to tighten it but the internal threads were bad. Changed plans and took one of the other cars and called Moss. Thanks to Kelvin and Jesse they sent a new one ASAP. I must add since I replaced all the bushings, etc. and put in the new rack the car drives like a new TD did in 1952. Really. It is amazing. Just a item to note. The boots are really high quality by comparison to the old replacement boots and the rack is filled with a synthetic grease that is somewhere between the viscosity of 90 weight oil and the old grease. I can see why it would never need to be replaced. Joe |

Do yourself a favor and don't put grease in a steering rack. Most grease won't flow easily so won't keep the rack teeth and pinion lubricated. It will get pressed out under pressure and not flow back. Use a high viscosity oil, or at lease a synthetic grease which will flow. |

Lewis, I think he is describing how the rack is preserviced with a new generation lubricant that will exceed the originally specified lubricant. Regards, Tom |
