MG TD TF 1500 - Thanks to many for assistance

Hello all;

I have posted now and then asking for help and have greatly benefited from the group wisdom.
My big problem with the TF has been the dreaded "50 mph shudder". It was awful. I narrowed it down to one wire wheel. I took them all to John Blake of JB's Wire Wheels in Santa Cruz CA. One wheel was tweaked, and JB fixed it. A local wheel shop balanced the rest up nicely. That took care of 90% of my shudder. I also had a bad shock. I took the groups advice and shipped it to Pete Caldwell for a rebuild. Had it back in a couple of days and the ride is much improved.
I also took the groups advice on Advanced Dist and had my dist rebuilt. It was not in bad shape, but now is recurved. I learned about advance timing lights from you'all and set mine at 30 deg BTDC at 3000rpm. Wow! Did that make a positive difference in performance! If you have not done this, do it now. It took away a lot of vibration and some of the buzz from the gear shift remote.
Thanks to Dave Braun for his many photos. In particular he was helpful as I installed a new carpet set with sound deadening underneath. The car is now quieter and cooler. I did buy a capet set from the Krazy Karpet guy on ebay. You get what you pay for and now I wish I had sprung for better quality carpets. Fortunately, they are relatively easy to switch, so I can upgrade in a few years if I wish.

The TF is a rolling restoration. I drive her often and enjoy every mile. Even more as there now is less heat, noise, vibration, shudder and shake. My goal is new paint. She has a proper color respray done in the early 70's. It is failing, with some cracking and fading. But, from six feet away, she looks great!

Thanks again to you all.

Good to hear that you are up and running again. I am still waiting for my new steering gaiters from Moss 14 data after ordering them. Maybe stuck in Norwegian customs??

The other day I bought a Brand new Hi gear 5 speed kit for my TF from an MG owner who had sold his TF to someone who wanted to keep it stock. So now I need a good Sierra box and in spring my Vera will be a long distance cruiser!
