MG TD TF 1500 - This wont rust

This is the first view today of the tappits etc. having removed the rocker cover. Do you think someone poured tar in? Mind you the car has been in store since 1956 so obviously the oil hasn't stood the test of time.

I'm sure there would be quite a few of us keen to see any pics of a 1956 time capsule. In our quest for original detail The M.G. T Type Owners & Restorers Club Inc. (TTORC) has just received 14 hi res Abingdon TD production line black and white pics. We are only able to share these with our members because of stringent copyright constraints. So reading the above comments perhaps although not that IT literate I will star a new thread on the car.
Although I might start a bit today I'm away for a few days from tomorrow including visiting Hutsons Ltd from whom I'm buying a new tub. I've taken a good few pictures as I dis-assemble the car basically in an attempt to remember how it goes back together.

Regarding the point about carbon deposit. What is there is not carbon in texture but a very thick tar like substance. More like old oil that's now virtually solidified. I acknowledge that it may have a high carbon deposit as a result of poor maintenance

It probably was JK. I could check my back emails, as I never throw anything away - especially original parts. I've supplied quite a few hessian tool rolls made to order to owners interested in authenticity. These have ended up on every continent except Africa and in the toolboxes of more than a few Concours winning cars... Cheers

Aren’t copyrights normally only protected for 70 years? And in the case of a defunct company who would go to court over 14 photographs of a production line? Makes no sense to me.

Bought an old Chevy 6 cylinder once that was as bad or worse, found out the owner never used detergent oil in it. Might be non detergent oil was used. Only a guess. PJ

Copyright law is complex and varies from country to country adding even further complexity. The short answer to your question Gene is whoever legally holds the copyright. My understanding in the case of the written word is that it exists here for 50 years after the death of the author and/or date of publication, if he or she dies before the expiration of that period. I don't make the rules Gene, nor do I have to agree/disagree or even express an opinion about them; but you, I and everybody else is legally bound to abide by them. My interest is solely in the preservation of these cars. Ideally preserving them as close to to the condition that they left the factory in. That's why TTORC exists and that's what floats my boat. Others simply are happy with whatever they think 'improves' the car and aren't at all concerned or even recognize the damage that they do. The hoons from the 60's are the classic example. I believe that we would all do well to recognise that we are but custodians and the next owner may not share our values. I do like the doctor's motto. 'Do no harm.' Our club entered into an agreement with the holder of the copyright and that agreement is enforceable in law. We were asked to sign a contract to that effect, which we have done and will abide by. Just to be clear JK's car is actually a TC. It looks pretty straight and will be a great car to restore.

So in his case his tool roll would be canvas from what I understand.

And on the copyright front: At least in the US, the copyrights can now go on for just about forever. This was changed back around 1975 IIRC. So if someone wants to push it they can enforce it. For example all of the manuals were purchased by Brooklands Books way back when. They now own the copyright and if you reproduce the manuals you are violating their copyright.

Every one is entitled to their view on a subject that could and can always get quite"heated". From a personal point of view I consider there are sufficient cars in both private and public museums that show the history of our cars. For those with both the time and bottomless pockets then the opportunity to restore a car to a "as it left the factory" is possible.My own opinion is that a car outwardly portraying the car in a manner that promotes a model performs a duty that should also be recognised. I've had and obviously enjoyed MGs since the age of 16 and at 75 have to be realistic as to both my budget and timeframe. I hope I don't offend to many.

You're spot on re the TC tool roll Chris. There are probably pics in the TA/B/C archive. It was almost certainly made from hood off cuts. Cheers

Interesting on the tool roll fabric. Mines in a very brittle condition (tool roll) as is the torn hood. However I'll see if there's enough for my daughter (a seamstress) with the help of her husband ( leather worker as a hobby really talented) with what's left of the existing hood.
