MG TD TF 1500 - Tonneau Fitting
My car is heavily restored. Has a hood and no half tonneau. The rear of the hood is screwed to a wooden 'batton' with two side peices at the rear. No idea if this batton is original - but I know that srewing the hood down to it wasn't ! I have no idea where the original hood/half tonneau would have had fittings or of what type. After a while trawling the web I couldn't get any decent close ups. For some reason people always photo the front or side of their car :-) I have seen lift dot type fittings and 'snap' fasteners in different configurations Could some body with an'original' set up post a couple of pics of the rear so I can replicate at least this part of the fitting correctly. I know that after that the exact fittings on the door etc are up to me :-) MG TF 1500 Thanks Dav |

My original top was 'tacked' to the rear wooden batten (which was stock) as well as the two side battens (which also were stock) ... seems to me it also had a couple of screws in those cupped washers...don't remember just where those were. I changed it to dome type fasteners so it can be 'popped' off.... although I haven't done that yet? |

If I'm not mistaken, the TD came from the factory with the hood screwed to the rear "battons." Owners chose to replace them with button snaps, so the hood could be raised from the rear to allow access to the cargo shelf. As for the tonneau, here is the link to the Moss Motors half and full tonneau installation instructions: http://www.mossmotors.com/graphics/products/PDF/241-220.pdf Cheers Larry |

If you substitute the snap buttons with screws and reinforcement dished washers, you will have a very close approximation of original by reviewing my top and tonneau installations on my website. Go to the Weather Equipment section in my mg td 15470 section http://www.dbraun99.com/ On the tonneau, some people believe that the lift the dot fastners should be horizontal pointed in the direction you should lift them rather than vertical as I placed them. hope this helps, Dave |

Dave, Coonsider another direction. When I face exactly the same situation as you I could not convince myself to punch holes in the steel for the fasteners. So I used suction cups ( you may call them suckers in your part of the world). As can be seen in the photo they were placed exactly where the Moss diagrams indicated for the metal fasteners. Worked like a charm. If you don't like it later you can always change to the punched holes. My only problem is that I would use the next larger sized cup for greater holding power. With warm regards Dick Thomas ![]() |
