MG TD TF 1500 - Tranny bearings
I am restoring a 1953 mg td tranny and need the following bearings for it. These bearings according to their markings were manufactured by R & M. The markings are as follows: 1. Roller bearing (9 balls) RM LJ 1 1/4 G 2.75" x 1.250" x .685" 2. Roller bearing (9 balls) RM LJ 1 1/8 G 2.500" x 1.125" x .685" 3. Roller bearing (9 balls) RM LJ 25 52mm x 25mm x 15 mm The first two have circlip on their outer surface. The most popular sellers for MG parts in the USA ofer these bearings at prices I find extremely high, therefore I will like to find a bearing dealer that carries these bearings or equivalents at a more reasonable price. Does anybody knows of a bearing dealer that could carry these bearings? Any informaction would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much. Stuart |

Stuart, you should be able to go to most any supplier of machine bearings and obtain those bearings at reasonable prices with just the information that you have. Take your old bearings with you. |

Hi Bud: Thank you very much for your advice, but remember I am in Puerto Rico and it is very difficult to obtain this parts here. Therefore I need a company ion mainland USA where I can order online. Thanks again. Stuart |

6205 is the generic # I found for the rear bearing. Any auto parts store should have, or be able to get that one. Don't have any cross-over info for the others. I think the "G" is for grooved. Don't know how much cheaper you can get them due to the "G" and unusual size but worth a try. George |

Stuart, Remember the center roller bearing has a grove that locates the bearing so the mainshaft is positioned properly. Here is a picture of the correct bearing and an incorrect part. Do you have the needle bearing sets? warmly, dave ![]() |

Stuart, I've been shopping for the same bearings, but have found they are about the same prices as Moss for the two grooved bearings ($36 and $41 + shp-special order). The smaller, rear is common and can be had for $15 (available off the shelf)(a couple dollars lower than Moss). The makers are NSK, SKF ,or Fafnier (Timken), all US made. I've emailed a technical question to Moss (What is country of origin?), but have not received an answer yet. If Moss' parts are Chinese or similar, I'll go with the the local brands. Tyler |

Stuart, I forgot this: The part numbers for the two grooved bearings are LS-11 and LS-12, the smaller is 6205, sold by Consolidated. Tyler |

I asked a friend and TC owner, who's spent a career in the bearing business, if there's any benefit to replace the ball bearings with roller bearings or needle bearings. Here in part, is his response:- "I see no advantage in going to roller or needle bearings. The selection of inch bearings is limited. I dont have an interchange manual, so can't tell you what other makes can replace R&M (Radson & Marles) But I'm sure SKF,FAG,NTN, etc, have equivalents. Just stay away from Chinese, which is what you would get from Moss. Just give them your numbers, and they will find the equivalent. If they dont have them in stock, they will order them for you. Tell them "NO CHINESE". The number of balls is not important. Some bearings have smaller, and more balls, some have bigger but fewer balls, but the load capacities are similar. Of great importance is to make sure the shaft and housing bores are not damaged. If they are blue, or flaky, this is an indication the bearing spun on the shaft or housing, and you will not get a good fit with the new bearing" Gord Clark Rockburn, Qué. |

Hi George, Tyler, Dave and Gord: Thank you very much for your excellent advice and comments, yhey surely been helpful. Right know I am waiting for the gearbox restoration CD to arrive from England, I will let you guys know how this turns out. I found bearing 6205 in Puerto Rico a little bit more than half Moss price, but Tyler is right, the other two are actually cheaper at LBC the the dealer in Puerto Rico. Thanks again. Stuart |

Here's the answer Moss sent me: #127-000 is made in Japan. #127-100 is made in Japan. #125-900 is made in China. Tyler |
