MG TD TF 1500 - TRANS/GEAR OIL....

Greetings.

I need some clarity, please.

I've searched the archives & read many threads
about the Red Line Manual Transmission fluid/oil/gear lube.....!

Result was confusion, not joy...!

What Red Line gear, oil, lubricant or fluid
can be used for my street driven, hypoid gears,
1950 mg td...........?

Red Line # 58304--75W90ns....?
Red Line # 57904--Gear Oil...75/90W...?
Red Line # 50304--Manual TransGear Oil 90W...?
Red Line # 50204--Manual Trans/lubricant...?

Red Line also talks about for use with 'limited
slip differential'...

So, which is it..........?
And can the same product be used in the
rear axle..........?

Please advise and clear the confusion.

TIA.

After researching several brands and types of oil here is what I found out. The type of oil needs to be API GL-4 which is compatible with the brass syncro's in the TD transmission. My choice was Red Line MT-90. It seems to work well although I have put less than 1000 miles on it since rebuild. You can find the specs on their website www.redlineoil.com . You can order from their website or summitracing.com . Hope this helps. Mark

hello DrRx, i don't believe you can go wrong with MT-90...i decided to use CRC STA-LUBE SAE85W90. the other lube i considered was Penzoil gearplus 80W90. all API GL-4 oils. regards, tom

Somewhere I read that using the Red Line oil gave a smoother shift. Anyone know about this and possibly why? PJ

Hi Dr, PJ, et al,
I just recently put Redline MT-90, #50304, in the trans in our TF. Have driven about 250 miles now, my first impression was that it was smoother shifting. It is, particularly when cold, less so after warmup. I'm still trying to retrain to pause in neutral between upshifts, it's been almost 50 yrs since it was natural for me in the old TD.
I didn't realize until I got 3 qts that it's probably not the stuff to use in the rear end.

Greetings.

I spoke with Dave Granquist, tech specialist,
at the RedLine Oil Company in Benicia, Ca.
1-800-624-7950

He said. "RedLine recommends MT-90--GL-4
for the transmission." And 75W90--GL-5
for the differential/rearaxle."
This was for 1950 MG TD.
Other models/years may be different, so
do be prudent, cuz bad things do happen....!

That's as of April 18, 2011.

Many thanks for your attention & concern
and info.

Happy MG trails...

Hi DrRx,
I think you should confirm with your supplier as to which lubricant goes where. Last year I put the MT90 75W90 in my transmission upon the advince of many on this board and the lub. distributor. My experience with the MT90 75W90 was a much smoother gear change and the gear noise was reduced. It was a very worthwhile change.
