MG TD TF 1500 - Valve Cover Gasket ?
Does anyone have a source for a valve cover gasket, other than Moss? I bought one a number of years ago made by Victor, well they are out of business. Any brands and part numbers would help. Not able to cross reference this gasket, to old. Thanks; Louis |

My question would be: Are you running stock valve cover or an aftermarket? I run an aftermarket one that I have never found a gasket that fits it correctly. Always too small and leak. In the past I cut my own from cork. That worked. This time I decided to make one from Nitrile NBR Rubber. I had purchased some Nitrile gasket "sets" years ago. Was very happy with the tappet cover gasket, but again the valve cover one was too small and leaked at front of my VC. Very happy with the result so far. I went with 1/4" but they had 3/16' also. Enough to make 2 (with some left over) cost me about $20.00 w/ shipping. Found it on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006H53DWY/ref=oh_o00_s00_i00_details |

Louis - Other than the Wollesley there is not another use for the XPAG valve cover gasket, so it will have to have been made for the T-series. I have quite a few lying around; send me your address and I will send you something. They are all NOS, some quite OS! I often soak them in warm water for a while, and fit them in place using thread to open them wide enough to fit the cover. Aftermarket covers are often sightly different dimensions! Some people use a gasket sealant on the head side only to hold them in place. Tom Lange MGT Repair |

Louis, I would recommend Davids solution,, I have a Silicone rubber gasket which was made by a Roadster Gaskets in Mass, but they are not in business any more,, The valve cover has been on and off many times and still doesn't leak,, With a sharp knife you should be able to cut one to fit your cover,,,and as Tom indicates, gasket cement on the head side,,, Much better than the cork gaskets which leak quickly,,, SPW |

I use the stock Moss cork gasket, and seal at the head with "gorilla snot", which is a yellow 3M gasket sealer... If the valve cover is flat on the bottom, this will stop most leaks.... Edward |

Steve, Were those the "orange" ones? The Nitrile ones I got years ago came from Rob Grantham. Very nicely done...just didn't fit on my aftermarket V/C. (still using the tappet cover from him ...1/16" thick on that one) Because shipping was a bit high from OZ I had got with several other members on this board and ordered a number of sets. It saved us all a bit of cash doing it that way. i.e. Cheaper for me to mail them out stateside when they got here. That is an option you might want to consider if you don't want, or need, to make your own. Been over 10 years ago but I think we ordered about 20 sets from him as I recall. Most people got 2 sets ...pretty much a lifetime supply given the age of most of us on here. |

David: I am running a stock valve cover for a 1952 MGTD. Thanks to all for the info. Louis |

DAVID, yes,, they are the orange ones,,,,, and so as not to waste any of the material, they made MG Octagon logo coasters out of the material from the center of the gasket!! ![]() |

Shame about Roadster gaskets. One of the best investments made on my TD. |
L Rutt |
I remember seeing the coasters now. Might have to make some black ones! The Nitrile cut easy with razor knife and I use some of the scrap for my mod to "Drip Pan" on ribbed sump. I was a little "unsure" if I had the correct material, (there is a lot of Nitrile out there!) but talked to Rob and he asured me what I got was correct. Only scarry thing now is I keep checking my oil ...not a drop under the TF. (So far) |

My gasket from Roadster has been on and off the engine thru 2 major rebuilds and still does not leak. I wish I had bought a few more before they went belly up. to bad, great product. Mine has been on the car for over 10 years. |

I SPRAY MINE WITH CLEAR COAT, LET IT DRY THEN PUT BLUE SILICONE ON THE UNDER OR HEAD SIDE, dOES NOT LEAK NOW ELLIS |

From "Practical mg td" by Jonathan Goddard: "I have however switched to a neoprene rubber gasket made for the Fiat 127 that is not only cheap but also long lasting. The part number for the Fiat item is 4130541." |

Ellis, I assume you are spraying the cork gasket ????? SPW |

Good to see balance in the discussion on Rocker Cover gaskets. David S. has highlighted the fact that it is the incorrect perimeter dimension of the after market Rocker Covers that therefore do not fit the original sized gaskets. I have written an article for my own Club's website here in Western Australia relating to the correct Rocker Cover set up in order to have no leaks resulting. The photo in the article is of my own TF's engine bay which has been restored over nine years now.Never any leaks. The key, like any success with T Type gear,is in the preparation phase. The website is www.mgtcownersclub.com On the website, look for 'Restorers Corner'. Then click on T Type and Y Type Rocker Cover Restoration-No leaks. Excelent paper by Rob! I might have to dig into fixing the stock V/C I have with a horrid chrome job on it. (Kind of the reason I went with an aftermarket one in the first place.) Rob, If you are still offering the Nitrile kits I think you should let the group know. Don't be shy ...it's a great product! I don't think anyone here would take offense to you offering them here. If your running stock V/C these are excellent. Maybe get a thread going on here to get a good quanity of them shipped stateside. (to save some shipping cost like we did years ago). |

Hi David, Appreciate your comments re the Nitrile gaskets. At this stage,I don't supply the compression moulded gaskets. The cost of production now in the accurate steel cavity moulding die was quite high. I see you are still into the good humour on this board! Very pleased you are continuing to be in awe of your TF.How is the driving going? Cheers for now. Matbe T. Lange would like to step up to the plate and order some and offer them to us. I got two sets from Roadster Gaskets while they were still doing it. He told me why he stopped but I forget. Something about the competition was selling them at a price he could not match.I don't even remember who the competition was. Getting old sigh! Cheers, Bob |

Sorry I was gone so long. It is a cork gasket and it is clear from a spray can Rustoleum. |

Gentlemen - I have been holding off because I wanted to have the items in hand before I wrote about it, but I can announce something right now. After months of work, I have taken over the manufacture of the original orange Roadster Gaskets for T-series cars. Last week I ordered 100 of each to be made as a first run, to see how they sell. The former Roadster Gasket owner has been EXTREMELY helpful in making this possible! They will be called MGT Roadter Gaskets, and delivery is anticipated in a month, if not earlier. If things go as planned, I will be offering either valve cover gaskets or tappet cover gaskets in the same high-quality silicone rubber material (I am waiting for the exact specs) for $30 each, or $55 for a pair, when ordered together. While this seems a lot compared to cork gaskes, remember that these gaskets fit right, seal right, and will last almost forever! I will either pay the postage or split it, depending on where it costs out. I'm delighted to offer these high-quality gaskets, and hope there is a market. Like my brass core plugs, the gaskets are of such high quality that you will not need to look at them until your next engine rebuild. The valve cover can come off and on as often as you want with no fear of damage or leakage, so in some ways I am offering an almost-lifetime product. The quality is almost too good! I'm proud to add these gaskets to my MGT line. Please contact me for any further information; I will notify the BBS when stock is in hand and orders can go out. Tom Lange MGT Repair |

TOM, THAT'S GREAT NEWS!!!!!!!! Will the "Coaster Trivits" also be available ?? SPW |
STEVE WINCZE |
Steve - tall thanks - I'll let you know. I'm very excited about having these for sale, since for years I heard that the Roadster Gaskets were positively the best. I will be offering ONLY the T-series gaskets. Best, Tom |

Wonderfull news Tom! Just curious: Anybody using one of those on an aftermarket cover out there? Anybody have one "un-installed"? I would be interested in finding out if they are any "wider/longer" than the stock gaskets. A "tracing" of one would be of intrest to me. |
David Sheward |
David, I have the Moss aftermarket Cover and Valve cover on mine and use the roadster gasket. No problems so far, been on and off a couple of times.I am going to order a spare set from Tom once he has them . I was glad to hear he is going to manufacture them. I love em.. |

Tom, This is the one I'm running. Purchased the "set" (V/C & T/C) years ago from a UK seller as "NOS after-market". Apeared to have never been on a car when I got them, and the boxes seemed about right for about late 50's! (Saddly the boxes were a victim of leaking roof in old garage, so long gone.) (I added the red engine paint to the ribs). This pic was taken (years ago) as I was attempting to "streach" one of the Nitrile gaskets to fit using some telco wire. Managed to get required 1/16" "overlap" on 3 sides. But you can see V/C was a bit "long in the tooth" at front edge. That is where it leaked! Later attempt managed to get that sealed ...but then leaked "plug-side". Finally gave up and cut one to fit from cork. Lasted about 10 years untill I decided to cut one recently from 1/4" Nitrile stock I found. Really thought I had it this time. Yesterday's "test flight" was a dissapointment. Lost about a quart in 200 miles ...on the "carb-side" this time. Too bad as I had all the oil cleaned off the engine & frame. Back to the drawing board! (And back to the bottom of the TF with another bottle of Purple Power, a gaggle of rags and the presure washer!) No leaks from the T/C vents now (after adding baffles to inside) ...but looks like a managed to get a small leak at bottom of that gasket as well. Close but no banana! Should have a good supply of pre-oiled rags when I get this right though! ![]() |

Tom, I have the Roadster gaskets on the TD valve cover and tappet cover. These are aftermarket chrome covers. The gaskets have been in place for a number of years and solved some nagging oil leaks. The only criticism I sometimes hear of these gaskets is their color, which tends more to the orange. It isn't bad, but it also doesn't match most variants of MG engine red. I don't know whether it is too late to consider a color change for the upcoming production run, but I wonder whether a less orange or a cork-like color may be a better options. The picture (attached) of my engine compartment shows the engine painted in Moss MG Engine Red and fitted with the Roadster gaskets. Larry ![]() |
