MG TD TF 1500 - Wagoner USA Master Brake Cylinder

Gentlemen:
I followed the advice of many here and sent off my shocks for rebuild by Peter Caldwell and now it is time to do the same for the Master brake cylinder. I've noted that there are many recommendations to have this single point of failure potential rebuilt by white Post Restorations which I now plan to do but I have two choices 1) send off the original master cylinder from the 54 TF or I have a NOS Wagoner (USA) unit that is a little smaller. My question to the group is: " are there any major differences between the orinal or the Wagoner that would favour one over the other?
Thanks for the help!

Rod. What is the cup diameter on the Wagner? Is it the same as the Lockheed?

The NOS Wagoner looks to be about 2/3 rds of the size of the original one on the car. It was most this difference that made me question whether I should use it or the original either way since it is a sinle point of failure I want to resleeve.

Use the original then, (I think- Don Harmer please correct me if needed) as Pressure (as in what you are making to apply the brakes)equals force divided by area. So I think if the area of the MC piston is smaller, you would have to push harder to get the same line pressure? Of course a smaller bore cylinder would not move the same volume of fluid either, so the pedal travel would be longer? George

George.
You are 50% correct. The smaller piston in the master needs to be pushed further to achieve the same fluid volumn moved and also it will be lighter in pedal pressure. Not heavier.

Sandy, You are sure right about me being wrong. Been way too long since physics and math, plus I forgot that there is a moving rather than fixed volume of fluid. Regardless, I think the correct thing is to use the original size cylinder? George

... a word of caution. I always keep a couple of rebuilt MCs on hand. About two years ago, I installed one of them, that had been rebilt locally, using modern seals, and it failed within a few weeks. I subsequently learned that modern seals have two thin lips, whereas, the original Lockeed LK15806 had one large lip.

I had some difficulty locating an original replacement as they are no longer being made, but once I did, there have been no more problems.

I know that Chris Hollum, our local Brit car parts suppler, has some on hand.

Contact me if you should want his coordinates.
