MG TD TF 1500 - wheel cylinder piston

Is it possible to glue the adapter (the sheet metal part) back onto the piston? JB Weld or something like that?
Michael Derrick

I would not recommend glue as the mask locates the shoe via the micram adjuster and coming adrift would ruin your day. You may be able to spot(induction) weld but I am sure enough people have renewed cylinders to have a few spare pistons lying around to send you one.

Michael, you can re-attach the brake pad shoe locator to the piston with a couple of m3 countersunk screws.

DAVID,
Might you be able to post a picture ??? I'm not quite sure what you mean,,,,,,

Thanks

I suspect that happened because the cylinder was frozen, and you tried to get it out with pliers or the like. Make up brake fittings for a grease gun, and it will pump right out. It's not worth trying to fix it, IMHO; they are readily available, both new and used.

I would be interested in knowing a supplier of new pistons. I have never seen them sold separately.

Not a fan of scrimping on brakes, especially with the single system on our cars. A whole set of 6 cylinders is now only $170 or so. A few years back, the fronts were $80 or so a piece, incredible bargin now. George

Hi Steve,I am off to the antipodes tomorrow so I shall not be able to post a pic until early March, but if you can wait that long no problem.

Basically what I did was to drill 2 holes in the shoe and spot the holes through to the piston. This is best done with the piston located in the cylinder bore which helps to locate the shoe centrally to the piston.

The holes in the shoe were countersunk to take M3 countersunk screws, and the holes tapped M3 into the piston. The hole centres as I remember were roughly the same as the original spot welds but there is enough room to position a secure fixing.Should you require more info before March then maybe I can sketch something from down under.

Cheers,

David.

Hi Steve, I should make it clear that the modification described refers to the front brake cylinders.

John - sorry I was so unclear. I meant that new wheel cylinders are readily available.
