MG TD TF 1500 - Which would you rather have TD truck or V8 -TD ?

Good Day all!
29 T-series on eBay today, they are comming out of the wood work. Which would you rather have?
V-8 TD... 190391128125 or
TD truck... 260589637873
P.S. The spare tire looks odd, what is up with that?

What a waste,I am no purist but to ruin a car like these two is beyond me.

Moss built a TD pickup truck in the '50's - could it be the same vehicle? Other than the pickup box, it looks like a faithful restoration.

I rather like the idea of a TD truck, just as I like the idea of a Model-A pickup. I remember crawling all around the Moss truck in CA in the 70's when it was parked in the showroom in Goleta.

But this eBay one seems a chop job to me. Moss nicely re-shaped the whole back of the car to remove the area behind the seats; the eBay one just seems to have the back of the car hacked open and a box shoved into the opening. It looks awkward and quick-and-dirty.

Where does the feel of a TD go when you add V-8 power?

I kind of like the truck...both as a "tribute" to the Moss Motors one and a great way to carry a lot of OSH! I could use that for GOF if I ever make it to one...think I "owe" more OSH than I could carry in the TF ;-)!! I could see doing this to a "T" if it were in a serious rear-end accident and totaled out. (wonder if that is how it came about?)
Isn't the old "Moss Truck" on display somewhere?
Don't care for the "V-8" conversion ..looks butt wierd to me. Seats look like they sit up too high and the "sack" over the spare tyre is hidious. Not my "cup of tea" ...would rather go for a "bed full of ale". LOL
David Sheward

V-8 is wrong in too many ways to count. I agree with Tom on the pick up. It's got potential though. Remove the casket they shoved in there and bring the bed out where it belongs. I think it could be made to look nicer than the Moss P/U which wasn't all that bad. I think they still have it.

Another ugly duckling added to the mix is the TF kit in the UK...yuk.

There are tasteful ways to turn a TD into a pickup, and not so tasteful.... that is a pretty good example of 'not so tasteful'....although, certainly no hassle storing the side curtains.
Nope... doesn't work for me?
gblawson(gordon)

We should tell Jeff Zorn at LBCARCO know about the truck. That would be a great way to bring his stuff to the car shows.
Bruce Cunha

Got to say, that I would not mind driving the V8 - Well once at least. Wonder how it does at high speeds?
Bruce Cunha

A friend has a TD which he converted to a chevy V8, 50 years ago, the car was writen up in The Immortal T series.
The book stated, it looks as if it came from the factory.
I have photo's if interested. He still does fabrication work, machine work, & welding for me. ( aircraft & mil. spec. parts & fabrication.)
Len Fanelli

Len, was your friends TD the one Mechanics Illustrated did the article on? As I remember the article was on a Chevy V8 conversion and only a slight blister on one engine side panel was visible to clear the generator. 50 years ago is about right for the article I read, not saying it was your friends car though. Len,
How are my old rear springs working out on that V-8 project??

When I was working in Cupertino in 1977, I used to see the Moss TD truck often. The local Ferrari dealer in Los Gatos, did the same thing with wrecked 250 GTE. Made the most delicous sound for a truck. I would park my 275GTB/4 near it and it never drew the attention the Ferrari truck did.

Not an MG, but as a one-time Morganista this may be the saddest thing I've ever seen on eBay...

Andy...you owe me a keyboard, I yaked on mine.
Let's see...what do I like about that one....uh nothing.
David Sheward

Let me see - it has a different frame, a different engine and trans, a different interior, a different suspension -- what's left of Morgan, other than a vague body similarity?

Does this make a Fiberfab a real TD?

Tom (with Morgans and MG's)

Good heavens....think i'm gonna hurl...
Its one thing to add a modern steering wheel, but the whole column....gee really fits in... and that muffler...holy sheet....!
People with too much money, rarely have too much taste!
gblawson(gordon)

They should pay one to even be seen in it! Bid's up to almost $20K too!

If that's a Morgan, then I guess this guy would be correct to sell this as a Rolls?

Paul Jennings

Paul,
I am dissapointed ...that is obviously a Bentley.
Now I'm going to have to test you.
What is this?
(can't remember if you saw it last time ..it's my favorite abortion)

David Sheward

Gents: Since I'm always the philistine, let me stir the pot a little since I haven't been bad mannered for at least 10 hours.

Are TC's whose owners converted the front end to VW Bug steering in 1959 less worthy of our interest or praise? My uncle [2 Jag MK II's, MGTC that came home from England with him brand new, 300SL convertible, Bizzarrini 5300 - none of which came my way, darn it] always said that the VW front end was the second best mod he did on the TC after the Shorrock blower.

So we make mods, presumably because they make the cars better. And a Mog with a big 2.2 Toyo engine would be torquey and hell-for-strong. Think about the front end - it's direct and in the end it's a better link to the front end.

So as a statue and a tribute to HFS Morgan, it's not so good. But as a Saturday morning 200-miles-to-breakfast back roads stomper, I think it might be right up there with a Super Seven or a GSXR 750.

As for the paint and shiny hood - that's bad, but nothing that a few cans of Tremclad and a 4 inch brush couldn't fix on a Sunday afternoon.

So [gulp] I'd put in a bid or two, though not as much as those guys are doing. But then I'm the guy who gave his bride a Volvo 122 Wagon with a Chrysler 331 Hemi as a wedding using wedding cars tonbridge present...

Dave

ps: almost all parts ready for the XPAG rebuilt after the fragging. We'll make it to the Kelowna Hillclimb, either in the TD or the 993. And it's spring on the Northern Prairie - that's good, too.
Dave Jorgensen

Dave..dave...dave.... go out into the middle of that Northern Prairie and sing God Save The Queen three times....then beat yourself with an MG TD oil dipstick...
We all know that anything and everything can be done to cars.... its just such a shame to see one that could be saved as 'stock' fiddled with to that extent.... If a person wants a modern equipped car, and one that never breaks down, has all sorts of 'extras'....its just so much easier to go buy a Mazda.... Isn't part of the fun knowing that all the parts are as they came from England...? I'm all for small improvements...little more CC's...gears....etc, but ya just gotta show 'some restraint'....

you Canadian rebel you....just how close are you to the U.S. border???
gblawson(gordon)

You're right Gord - it's the old Alberta Rebel Yell. I decided a long time ago that Alberta was the only province in Confederation that was south of the Mason-Dixon line - we're a fightin' bunch of ol' buggers, we are...

But I know what you're saying about respecting the engineering tradition and heritage that is embodied in our beautiful British pieces. But there's still a big piece of me that's a hot-rodder at heart [my best project was a late 914/4 2-litre that ended up with a 911 2.7 with Webers and RS cams.] So if there's a way to make it faster, then for me I'll always break a few rules to get there. But I guess even I have limits - I hear that the current hot 914 setup is a 3.8 Buick V6 with an Edelbrock manifold and a big 4bbl - now that gives me a shiver down the backbone.

But that Mog looks just plain bad-mannered and ready to kick some serious autoslalom hind-end. I'd like to be there to see that.

best,
Dave
Dave Jorgensen

Paul, yes it is the same car, Steve, he thanks you very much, the used springs helped out as "helper springs".You may not agree with what he has done, but, he is a car guy, show, race, & just crazy about cars, & has produced more automotive projects than most of us have just dreamed about.

Dave Sheward - Opel? (or, as my grandfather insisted on saying, Opal).
t lange

Dave, sorry I didn't get back to you sooner on, "Your favorite abortion", but I just recovered from the shock of seeing the photo. If it wasn't for the license plate, I'd swear it came from, oops! I better not say it as this is a very friendly forum. (Grin).
