MG TD TF 1500 - XPAG Piston Rings
Hi All, Another "odd" problem with the rebuild of an XPAG engine. (there have already been more than a few) I went to install the .060" o/size rings (Hastings) that I got from Moss, and discovered that there are only 4 oil ring scrapers, instead of the required 8. Additionally, the rings are thicker than the piston grooves. They won't fit. Since it is .060" o/size there is the possibility that some "off-brand" aftermarket pistons were used in that rebuild, but there are no "names" on the pistons. As the oil ring scrapers were incorrect, I'm hoping that the other rings are incorrect also, otherwise I'm into replacing the pistons. Does anyone have the dimensions (specifically the thickness) of Hasting's ring for an XPAG? |

Jim - I have heard of Hastings rings recently not fitting right. I have a fondness for Deves rings, and the makers are very responsive to needs. I give them the bore diameter, the number of rings on the piston and the groove size, and they make me up a set of rings to fit. Don't be quick to throw away the existing pistons. Your pistons must be older if they have a bottom scraper ring; many people just leave off that bottom ring when rebuilding, with no ill results. Tom Lange MGT Repair |
