Triumph TR6 - Carpet underlay

I will be installing new carpet. Can anyone give me advice if it is worth installing an insulation underlay before the carpet. The intent is to reduce engine /ransmission noise. Crappy tire have this in roll form, but I have no idea how thick this is. Has anyone installed this material, and was it worth it?
Cheers Pete

Ha Pete..how ya doin?
I would definitely add the underlay. Not sure what CTs looks like as I bought my underlay in the US. I got weived foil one side and felt the other side. I presume this is what you got? Thickness around 3/8" to 1/4"...foil side is applied to the body side of the car. Can not really say if reduced noise as did this at restore time and no previous experience without it installed. Can not do any harm though. I did the entire interiour including both tunnels, the fire wall, and rear shelf. The stuff is easy to cut. Can be glued in place with 3M general trim spray adhesive. This stuff works great but you must be patient and let it sit for a while before applying the underlay to its final resting place. Once applied, you will not remove it. Before applying, cut and trim to fit and cut holes in the underlay where the special dome fasteners go for the carpet set. The carpet set I bought had a useless layer of grey padding attached. I ripped it off and filed under G. The carpet set is not glued down to this except on the back shelf and the 2 tunnels. If you have rear deck speakers now is the time to install the wiring.

So Pete to answer your question..Yes do it.
Have fun

Hi Pete,
I bought foam at Home Depot about 1/2 thick. It's smooth on one side and small raised circles on the other, easy to cut. I'm not totally sure it makes a big road noise difference as I installed it a shortly after getting my car but it feels and looks nicer than the crappy underlay that was there before. Like Rick I glued it to the transmission tunnel and left it loose on the floor.
See you at Ancaster ?

Thanks for the addition. I also did not glue the underlay to the floor. Not necessary to do. With it not glued down, the entire interiour (except back shelf) can be removed down to bare metal (painted). Makes it nice when you have to remove engine and tranny which I thought I would never have to do:)

Hi all,

I believe there is also another product out there supplied by one of our own TTC members........

Doesnt Bob B. (the maganta monster) have a good heat shield/underlay product???

Please explain" the maganta monster"

Thanks for the advice, gents. Although there doesn't seem to be a strong "this will definetly make a difference", I will probably install this anyway. One question Rick, what do you mean by "2 tunnels"?
ps Rick...I'm doin just fine, & Charlie, I don't think I'll be going to Ancaster, but thanks for asking. I'll be fidgetting with trying to get the transmission back in place (I put in a new clutch a couple of weeks ago).
Cheers

Ya know..one that goes east and another for west.

The tranny tunnel and the prop shaft tunnel.

Pete, which clutch did you get..B&B or Leacock? Also in the bell housing double up the bearings both ends where the cross shaft incerts....double protection. Also when putting tranny back on engine, make sure bell housing is TOTALLY touching the engine back plate. DO NOT use the bell housing to engine nuts and bolts to "pull it home". This will distort the engine back plate and give future problems with clutch.

Don K. The magEnta monster is a TR6 that Bob B has been restoring and documenting in articles in the "Rag Top"..the TTCs magazine. Ken, was not aware he offers a heat shield product. I know he does offer wheel well protectors and I think the engine/rad air deflector.

Torony Transit has its own mag. There must be a lot of members in that group.

If you are going to say it you have to spell it correctly..
Tranta.... is the proper spelling an enunciation.

No offense, but not only do you (at times) misspel werds, but I also have a hard time understanding just what you are trying to say e.g. " ya know..one that goes east and another west". Do you mean when the bonnet is facing north or south? or do I have tunnel vision?
To answer your question, I have installed a magic clutch with a Gunst bearing. (It was highly recommended by an honorable member of the fraternity). Yes I have installed improved (larger) cross shaft bushings, new fork pin etc. Thanks for the heads up on pulling the bell housing with the bolts. I probably would have done this.

Pete
As you can see from a current post of mine, I will be making every effort to mend my ways....spelling correctly that is.
On the subject of tunnels....I suppose our friends south of the border might get it sooner than someone up here. They have a lot more of them down there than we do in Canada. Specifically 2 holes in a mountain that has traffic moving in opposite directions on the compass. Some rather impressive tunnels I might add. Sounds like you will not have to worry about your clutch.

It's my understanding that you need to be somewhat carefull with your selection of underlay. If by chance you select a dense material and it gets wet for what ever reason it can hold the moisture and cause rust.
